The First Annual Suzanne M. Hayes Memorial Award
Margaret Ann Samuels
Suzanne McDaniels Hayes was a gifted leader and a compassionate and loving pastor. She was dedicated not only to her family and friends, but also to her community. Suzanne served as Pastor at Old First Presbyterian Church from 2005 to 2008 and was the first Board President of Four Seasons City Farm. She led the effort to establish City Farm as a registered nonprofit organization. Suzanne was always upbeat and optimistic and embodied the traits we aspire to. The inaugural award in Suzanne’s honor is presented to Margaret Ann Samuels.
Margaret Ann has been an active board member and volunteer since City Farm’s founding in 2004. Even during the hot summer months and at 82 years old, Margaret Ann can be found out in the garden every week. She has also spent countless hours behind the scenes to ensure that City Farm remains up to date on all of the paperwork associated with being a nonprofit.
Margaret Ann’s effort in the garden is an extension of her lifetime work to protect the environment and to address issues of social justice. She has dedicated herself to helping others by identifying injustice and working to eliminate it, which is exemplified in her work to further City Farm’s mission.
While Margaret Ann most certainly does not live and work with such passion in expectation of recognition, there are few individuals who have impacted a grass-roots organization to the extent that she has. We are pleased to recognize her commitment and contribution to City Farm with this award.
